Red Spotted Toad

Friday, August 25th, 2017

Out for a nice morning hike in Molina Basin, located just a few miles up Mount Lemmon within the Coronado National Park just outside of Tucson and ran into a few of these tiny hoppers, the Red Spotted Toad.

These are so tiny and so cute but those red spots are not just for looks. These little creatures pack a poisonous punch so don’t lick it, I’m sure the temptation is there but you’ve been warned.

The top photo is zoomed in to see his red spots  and the photo below reveals just how little these are .

It’s easy to see the big things but if you slow the go then you can capture the smaller details in life.

Having a professional guide escort you thru this amazing ecosystem here in the Sonoran Desert you’ll be sure to see some amazing things that you would pass up if not paying attention.

“In every walk with Nature one receives far more than he seeks.” -John Muir

Thursday, August 24th, 2017

“Nature is fuel for the soul, ” says Richard Ryan, lead author and a professor of psychology at the University of Rochester. “Often when we feel depleted we reach for a cup of coffee, but research suggests a better way to get energized is to connect with nature,” he says.  “One of the pathways to health may be to spend more time in natural settings,” says Ryan.

In recent years, numerous experimental psychology studies have linked exposure to nature with increased energy and heightened sense of well-being.

Arizona Poppy (Kallstroemia grandiflora)

Wednesday, August 9th, 2017

The “Arizona poppy” is also known as “summer poppy” and “orange caltrop”. Its orange flowers resemble the orange flowers of the California poppy, and it blooms from mid-summer to October in Arizona!

There five-petaled, three quarter to one and one-half-inch wide flowers rise above the plant.  Petals have numerous nectar guides, are able to reflect ultraviolet light and just like many of our Arizona blooms they only remain open for one day.

Enjoy a guided hike or mountain bike ride thru this beautiful desert landscape with Southwest Trekking.

The Green Desert!

Tuesday, August 8th, 2017

Guests on my morning hike at Starr Pass today were commenting on how green the desert looks.  It’s really amazing how the desert just green’s up after the monsoon rains!  This is a beautiful time of year to get outside for a hike or mountain bike ride and enjoy this lush scenery!
