Scolopendra polymorpha – Giant Sonoran Centipede

Saturday, September 2nd, 2017

Meet the Scolopendra polymorpha, the Giant Sonoran Centipede! This is by far the creepiest thing to me however as creepy as it is, I am fascinated by it and know it’s not to fear, it has no interest in us so admire from a distant and don’t touch.

There are two types of Centipedes native to the Sonoran Desert, the Giant Sonoran Centipede and the Common Centipede, which is much smaller and more brown and banded then the Giant. The Giant pictured above is about 6 inches or more! It is different in color and markings, it is larger and has much more venom then the Common Centipede.

Giant Centipedes are large enough and venomous enough to  make a meal out of small frogs, lizards, and rodents!

The Sonoran Desert is a special place with so much diversity of life. I can never get bored of just how amazing and healing this great Desert is.

Cactus blooms in Arizona

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2017

Southwest Trekking provides professional custom hiking and mountain biking tours with transportation and outdoor education!

Stunnig colors appear as summer rain triggers amazing cacti flowers of all kinds!

Pictured above is a cholla cactus with a brilliant purple flower, however cholla blooms vary in color adding to the splendor!

The fishhook barrel tends tends to bloom a crown of beautiful flowers all at once that also can range in color spectrums. This beauty is often referred to as the “compass cactus” because larger barrels tend to lean Southwest! (That could be handy)

Arizona Poppy (Kallstroemia grandiflora)

Wednesday, August 9th, 2017

The “Arizona poppy” is also known as “summer poppy” and “orange caltrop”. Its orange flowers resemble the orange flowers of the California poppy, and it blooms from mid-summer to October in Arizona!

There five-petaled, three quarter to one and one-half-inch wide flowers rise above the plant.  Petals have numerous nectar guides, are able to reflect ultraviolet light and just like many of our Arizona blooms they only remain open for one day.

Enjoy a guided hike or mountain bike ride thru this beautiful desert landscape with Southwest Trekking.

Sonoran Sunrise

Friday, July 14th, 2017

The summer monsoon storms create the most breathtaking views!

Seeing the morning sun ascend over the Santa Catalina Mountains after a night of monsoon storms is inspiring, yet not entirely captured in photos.

The best way to experience this in it’s splendor is an early morning hike or a bike ride, mountain or road.

Southwest Trekking Professional Guiding Service offers professional, knowledgeable hiking and biking guides, bicycle rentals, trail support, and shuttles to the trailhead of your choice.

Summer seasons

Tuesday, July 4th, 2017

Southern Arizona is known for its two distinctive summer seasons, dry summer and wet summer.

The dry summer consists hot temperatures in the triple digits with no moisture beginning in May through June.

Wet summer begins in July when large violent storms roll in and display their impressive power with wind, lightning and rain (a bunch of rain)!!!

Truly a wonder of nature, these storms bring an explosion of life that is visible to the eye.

Ground cover and a second blooming of wildflowers blanket the desert and mountains!
