Arizona Poppy (Kallstroemia grandiflora)

Wednesday, August 9th, 2017

The “Arizona poppy” is also known as “summer poppy” and “orange caltrop”. Its orange flowers resemble the orange flowers of the California poppy, and it blooms from mid-summer to October in Arizona!

There five-petaled, three quarter to one and one-half-inch wide flowers rise above the plant.  Petals have numerous nectar guides, are able to reflect ultraviolet light and just like many of our Arizona blooms they only remain open for one day.

Enjoy a guided hike or mountain bike ride thru this beautiful desert landscape with Southwest Trekking.

Waterfalls in the Desert??

Thursday, July 27th, 2017

Chiva Falls is one of Tucson’s hidden treasures!  While it slows to a trickle during our dry months, it becomes a virtual oasis during our rainy season.  Chiva Falls is on the east side of Tucson, about 5 miles out of town on a dirt road.  From there, it is another 4 miles off-road, accessible only by mountain bike or off-road vehicle.

If you are visiting or new to the Tucson area, it’s worth hiring a professional guide to show you around.  We’d love to share our Sonoran Desert with you!

Pincushion Cactus

Monday, July 24th, 2017

These little beauties are blooming in the desert after the recent rains!   This one was spotted along the Las Cienegas Passage of the Arizona Trail on Saturday.  Like many desert cactii, the flowers close up at night and reopen during the day.  They are small cacti, usually growing up to 6-7 inches (20 cm) high, and are shaped similar to a barrel cactus. They often grow alone, but this one was among a large group of pincushion cactus in a rocky area.

Choosing a guided hike or mountain bike ride with Southwest Trekking will help you enjoy some of the special attractions we have in the Sonoran Desert.  Our professional guides can help you identify flora and fauna of the desert as well as choose appropriate trails for you to enjoy!

Pretty

Friday, July 21st, 2017

Beyond the populated city awaits some of the prettiest views.

The monsoon rains make the whole desert pop with color. Pictured above you have the iconic Saguaro, Teddy Bear Cholla, Palo Verde Trees, Ocotillo, and flora that only reveals its beauty after a few storms.

The rain cools down the hot summer giving a nice break for some outdoor fun with a relaxing nature hike or for more of a workout a bike ride, that will surely get your body moving

Barrel Cactus (Ferocactus)

Wednesday, July 19th, 2017

The Barrel Cactus, Ferocactus is the Latin genus name meaning “fierce cactus”.

This close up image of the Barrel’s spines reveal fierce yet beautifuly colored spines. The larger spines keep away thirsty desert creatures, and the smaller spines help prevent water loss and scorching by reflecting away some of the intense desert sunlight.

Barrel cacti grow into a squat tubular shape, commonly growing 2-4 feet but may grow to be 6-10 feet tall. It can reach a diameter of 18 to 30 inches or more. Their lifespan ranges from 50 to 100 years old!

The yellow/red flowers and yellow fruit of the Barrel cactus always grow at the top of the plant. They bear no spines and only a few scales. Fruits become fleshy and often juicy when mature, but are not usually considered edible. In emergencies only, the barrels water supply can be harvested but is likely to cause diarrhea if ingested when the stomach is empty.

The Barrel Cactus is often called the “Compass Barrel ” because some of the larger plants lean toward the southwest. So if you need a little direction these round, happy cacti can help point the way.

Better yet hiring a Southwest Trekking Professional guide knowledgeable with the Sonoran Desert trails in the Tucson valley is a winning choice
